What does acupuncture feel like?

By: Kevin Tangeros, L.Ac., MSOM

This is a question that I get asked quite frequently. When I first tell people that I am an acupuncturist, most become very curious. And I LOVE that! This is my time to educate them on the benefits of this fantastic medicine that is so underutilized. Most people have never had acupuncture and aren’t even sure what it is or what it is used for.

So, what does acupuncture feel like? Acupuncture is a very relaxing experience. I always tell people that initially they will feel a little prick, but after the needle is in they won’t even know it’s there anymore. Some might not feel anything, while others might feel a dull pressure at the acupuncture point or experience a moving/traveling sensation throughout their body. Many people even fall asleep during a treatment! I always confirm with the patient to make sure nothing is uncomfortable for them, and if something is, then I will adjust it appropriately. Acupuncture is a time for our bodies to relax and heal.
